Wedding Ceremony
Blending of two families
Sept. 6, 2015

Since we wanted our wedding to reflect our diverse backgrounds, we will be having a mixed Indian and Christian wedding.

Weddings are such an important part of Indian culture- it not only brings two individuals together in a marriage but also the family. It's also an occassion to reconnect with all your friends, neighbours and distant family members. It's also an opportunity to dress up and wear new jewlery and clothing!

Indian weddings consist of a multitude of ceremonies and we are so lucky that Mr. Vivek Gore agreed to conduct them. He will be explaining all the rituals and their importance as Jacques and I go through them but we have included a short description of some of the rituals below.

Baraat - 10:30AM

Groom riding a white horse with wedding party dancing

The wedding day starts with the groom arriving on a white mare to the wedding site. Since we will be having our wedding at Richmond Marriott, Jacques accompanied by his Baraati, groom's side of the family, will be singing and dancing around the perimeter of the hotel. We will have a dhol player and a DJ van so make sure to wear your dancing shoes.

After the baraat, the bride's side of the family welcomes the groom in the wedding hall and all the guests take their seats at this time.

First Look

The groom takes his place in the 'Mandap' and a sheet of cloth is held in front of him as the bride walks down the aisle. When the bride reaches the Mandap, the cloth is taken away and the groom gets to see his bride for the first time. The bride and groom are considered married whent they go around the sacred fire seven times.

the Wedding

The bride and groom are considered married whent they go around the sacred fire seven times. The newly wedded couple then take seven steps on heaps of rice which are like vows.

Christian Ceremony

The ring and vow exchange will be conducted after the Indian ceremonies. We will also be incorporating certain African American traditions to honor Jacques' heritage.

The wedding ceremony will be followed by lunch
